Ask three clinics what an STD test costs and you may get three very different answers. That is mostly because "an STD test" is not one test. The price depends on how many infections are checked, how they are tested for, and whether you have symptoms that need explaining.
What makes one test cost more than another
- How many infections it covers. A blood test for HIV and syphilis costs less than a panel that adds gonorrhoea, chlamydia, herpes, hepatitis and more.
- How they are tested for. Blood tests look for antibodies. PCR tests on urine or a swab look for the organism itself, which is how gonorrhoea, chlamydia and several others are found, and they cost more.
- Whether you have symptoms. A discharge or a sore may need a culture to identify the organism and the antibiotics it responds to.
- Treatment. Usually charged separately, and only if something is found.

Which test do you actually need?
A routine check with no symptoms. The advanced profile covers the infections most worth ruling out, including gonorrhoea and chlamydia, which are often silent. The standard profile suits someone who mainly wants HIV, syphilis and hepatitis checked.
Discharge, burning or a sore. The symptomatic profile, because a culture shows exactly what is causing it and which antibiotic will work.
A specific exposure. Tell the doctor what happened and when. The right test depends on the exposure and on the time since, because some infections take weeks to show on a test. If it was a possible HIV exposure in the last 72 hours, ask about PEP first: that is urgent, and testing can follow.
Ways to keep the cost down
- Take the free HIV rapid test even if you are not ready for a full panel.
- Government klinik kesihatan also offer free HIV screening.
- Test at the right time after an exposure, so you do not pay for a test that is too early to give an answer.
- Ask what a panel covers before you pay, and whether treatment is included.
