What the pneumococcal vaccine protects against
The pneumococcus is carried harmlessly in the nose and throat by many people. It causes illness when it reaches the lungs, the bloodstream or the lining of the brain, and it is the commonest bacterial cause of pneumonia in adults.
Risk rises with age and with chronic illness, which is what the recommendations below follow from.
Who the pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Adults with chronic heart, lung, liver or kidney disease
- People with diabetes
- People without a functioning spleen, and those with sickle cell disease
- People who are immunocompromised, including from medication
- Smokers
- Young children, as part of routine childhood immunisation
Bring any record of previous pneumococcal vaccination. Which vaccine you need depends partly on what you have already had.
How the doses work
There is more than one type of pneumococcal vaccine, and they are not interchangeable. Which you need, and whether you need more than one, depends on your age, your health conditions and what you have had before.
This is not an annual vaccine. For most adults the course is one or two doses, spaced by a defined interval, and that plan is set at the consultation. Side effects are usually soreness at the injection site, sometimes with mild fever or aches for a day.
How it differs from the flu vaccine
They are frequently recommended together, particularly for older adults, and having one is not a substitute for the other.

The clinic is clean, the staff are professional and welcoming, incredibly efficient. The clinic interior design also calming and made my visits less anxious. The doctors here (Dr. Chan & Dr. Kon - sorry if misspelled) are very attentive, explain briefly to me what the do's and don'ts on after care treatments and for future preventions. I also just learned that this clinic is specialized in skin problems and i refer my dry and ictchy skin problems on my fingers. I've been put some plasters to hide the crack and dry skin for months.
