Sexually transmitted infections
Syphilis
Syphilis is curable, and early syphilis is usually cured by a single injection. It is missed so often because the first sore is painless and heals on its own while the infection continues.
Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is curable with the right antibiotic, but resistance is a real and growing problem, which makes correct diagnosis, correct treatment and a follow-up check more important than they used to be.
Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STI and the quietest. Around 70% of women and many men have no symptoms at all. It is also one of the easiest to cure, which is the entire case for testing rather than waiting.
Genital herpes
A painful blister or ulcer near the genitals is worth having looked at quickly. Herpes cannot be cleared from the body, but antivirals started early shorten an outbreak, reduce pain, and lower the chance of passing it on.
Genital warts and HPV
Genital warts are caused by HPV, usually types 6 and 11, which are not the types behind cervical cancer. They are treatable, they recur in a good share of people, and a vaccine covers what you have not already caught.
Knee and joint pain
Knee osteoarthritis
The commonest cause of persistent knee pain after middle age, and the reason most people come in about a knee. It is a wearing of the cartilage that cushions the joint. It progresses, but the rate is not fixed, and a good deal of what determines it is treatable.
Meniscus and cartilage injury
The meniscus is the shock absorber of the knee. It tears in two quite different ways, and telling which one you have is what decides the treatment, because most tears do not need an operation.
Men's and general health
Erectile dysfunction
About 40% of men have it at 40, and close to 70% by 70. It is common, it is treatable, and it is often the first warning of a blood vessel problem, which is why it is worth an appointment rather than a pharmacy shelf.
Fatty liver
Fat inside the liver cells, affecting roughly a quarter of adults worldwide and causing almost no symptoms until late. Caught at the fatty stage, before scarring, it is one of the more reversible chronic conditions there is.
Hair loss
Hair loss
Treatment holds and thickens the hair that is still there. It does not bring back a follicle that has already gone, which is the entire argument for being seen early rather than trying another shampoo.
Hair loss in women
Women rarely lose hair the way men do, and the treatment is not the same either. The parting widens while the hairline holds, iron and thyroid explain more of it than anything else, and the best known drug for men is unsafe for many women.
