Worth testing if any of these apply
Most sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms early on, so waiting for something to appear is not a reliable way to find them. You do not need to match every line. One is reason enough.
- You have had unprotected sex, or a condom failed
- You have a new partner, or more than one partner
- A partner has been diagnosed with an STI
- You have symptoms: discharge, burning on urination, genital ulcers, sores, rashes or lumps
- You want a routine check for peace of mind

What one visit covers
Which of these you need depends on the exposure and on any symptoms. It is decided at the consultation rather than ordered as a fixed panel.
- HIV
- A 4th-generation rapid test from a finger prick. The result comes back in about 15 minutes, in the same visit, and this one is free.
- Syphilis
- A blood test: VDRL, RPR and TPHA. Curable, and early syphilis is usually cleared by a single injection.
- Gonorrhoea and chlamydia
- Urine, or a throat, rectal or genital swab, depending on the exposure. Both are curable with antibiotics.
- Genital herpes
- A swab or PCR where there is a lesion to sample, a blood test where there is not. Antivirals started early shorten an outbreak.
- HPV and genital warts
- Examination and treatment for warts, plus a Pap smear for women, which looks for the cell changes HPV can cause.
- Hepatitis B and C
- A blood test for both. Chronic infection stays silent for years, which is the reason to look rather than wait for something to appear.
- Trichomonas, mycoplasma and ureaplasma
- The less common causes of discharge and irritation, worth testing for when the usual panel comes back clear.
- Culture and sensitivity
- A Gram stain and swab culture where an organism needs identifying, and where knowing which antibiotic will work changes the treatment.

Blood, urine or a swab, depending on what is being tested for. The HIV rapid test is a fingerprick.
Results, explained
The HIV rapid test comes back in about 15 minutes, in the same visit. Laboratory tests generally return within three working days, and a doctor talks you through what they mean.
Treatment, if it is needed
Treatment starts here. Gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis are curable with antibiotics; herpes and HIV are controlled with medication and monitoring. Partner notification and retesting are part of the plan, because treating one person and not the other returns the infection.

Who this is for, and who should do something else first
Screening is the right first step for most people. For two situations it is not, and both are more urgent than a test.
Come in and test
- The exposure was more than a week ago and you want it ruled out
- You have symptoms: discharge, burning on urination, ulcers, sores, rashes or lumps
- A partner has been diagnosed and you need to know where you stand
- You are starting a new relationship, or testing together before you do
- Nothing has happened, and you would simply rather know
Ask about something else first
- The exposure was within the last 72 hours: ask about HIV PEP, not testing. It is a 28-day course that has to start as soon as possible, and it is the more urgent conversation.
- The exposure was yesterday: a test now would be inside the window period and would tell you nothing. Come in anyway and we will tell you when to return, or start PEP if it is still within 72 hours.
- You have severe abdominal pain, a high fever, or you are very unwell: that needs seeing today as an acute problem, not booking as a screen.

The clinic is clean, the staff are professional and welcoming, incredibly efficient. The clinic interior design also calming and made my visits less anxious. The doctors here (Dr. Chan & Dr. Kon - sorry if misspelled) are very attentive, explain briefly to me what the do's and don'ts on after care treatments and for future preventions. I also just learned that this clinic is specialized in skin problems and i refer my dry and ictchy skin problems on my fingers. I've been put some plasters to hide the crack and dry skin for months. - Yes. The 4th-generation HIV rapid test is free, whether or not you have anything else done that visit, and it can be taken anonymously. The result comes back in about 15 minutes.
