Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, given as an injection under the skin once a week. It acts on two gut hormone receptors, GIP and GLP-1, where the older medicines in this class act on GLP-1 alone. In practice it slows how quickly the stomach empties, blunts appetite, and improves how the body handles blood sugar.

What that feels like is being full sooner and staying full longer, and thinking about food less. It is not a fat burner and it does nothing to food you have already eaten. If the eating does not change at all, the result is smaller, which is why it is prescribed alongside a plan rather than instead of one.

The Mounjaro dose schedule

Mounjaro side effects, in order of how likely they are

Most are digestive, most appear in the days after a dose increase, and most settle. Published rather than buried, because you should be deciding with them in front of you.

Nausea: The commonest by a distance. Worst in the days after stepping up a dose, and usually settling within a week or two at that dose. Smaller meals and stopping when full rather than when the plate is empty helps more than anything else.
Diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting: Common, same pattern, same timing. Constipation is the one most likely to persist and the one most easily dealt with once mentioned.
Reduced appetite and burping: Expected rather than adverse. The appetite effect is the point of the drug.
Injection site reactions: Redness or itching where it was given. Rotating the site between abdomen, thigh and upper arm largely prevents it.
Gallbladder problems: Uncommon but real, and more likely when weight comes off quickly. Persistent pain in the upper right abdomen needs seeing about rather than waiting out.
Pancreatitis: Rare. Severe abdominal pain going through to the back, with vomiting, means stopping the drug and being seen the same day.
