Gonorrhoea symptoms worth coming in about
Many people, women especially, carry gonorrhoea without noticing. Where symptoms do appear they depend on where the infection is, not on how bad it is.
- White, yellow or green discharge, burning on urination, or bleeding between periods
- Testicular pain or swelling, or lower abdominal pain
- Rectal discharge, itching, soreness, bleeding, or pain on opening the bowels
- A mild sore throat and swollen neck glands after oral sex, which is usually all a throat infection does
- Red, irritated eyes with a thick discharge
- No symptoms at all, and a partner who has been diagnosed
Fever, painful or swollen joints, a widespread rash, or red and painful eyes with heavy discharge mean being seen the same day. Rarely, gonorrhoea spreads through the bloodstream.
How gonorrhoea is tested for
A urine sample is what most people need. The swabs exist because urine testing alone routinely misses infections that are not in the urethra.
- Urine
- Covers urethral infection, and is what most people come in for. No swab, no examination.
- Throat and rectal swabs
- Added where the exposure or the symptoms point there. These two sites are the ones urine testing alone routinely misses.
- Vaginal or eye swabs
- Where symptoms are at that site. An eye infection with thick discharge is seen the same day rather than booked.
- Culture and sensitivity
- Where the organism needs identifying, this is what guides the antibiotic choice. Resistance is a real and growing problem, which is why this matters more than it used to.
Treatment, and what decides whether it worked
Ceftriaxone, usually one dose
An injection, and the current first-line treatment. Alternatives exist where it cannot be used.
No sex for seven days
Counted from the day treatment finishes, not from the day you started feeling better.
Partners from the last 60 days
Tested and treated too. Sex with an untreated partner reinfects you and wastes the course.
A test of cure, sometimes
A few weeks later for throat and rectal infections, and for any case where symptoms persist.
Why the follow-up matters more than it used to
Gonorrhoea, spelled gonorrhea in American English and known here as Γ’ΒΒthe clapΓ’ΒΒ, is curable with the right antibiotic. What has changed is that the number of antibiotics which reliably work has been shrinking for two decades, and resistant strains are now routine rather than exotic.
That is why the parts of this that look like admin - finishing the course, waiting the seven days, getting partners treated, coming back for a test of cure where one is indicated - are the treatment rather than an afterthought to it.

The clinic is clean, the staff are professional and welcoming, incredibly efficient. The clinic interior design also calming and made my visits less anxious. The doctors here (Dr. Chan & Dr. Kon - sorry if misspelled) are very attentive, explain briefly to me what the do's and don'ts on after care treatments and for future preventions. I also just learned that this clinic is specialized in skin problems and i refer my dry and ictchy skin problems on my fingers. I've been put some plasters to hide the crack and dry skin for months.
