Dr. Chan graduated in Russia in 2012 and began his training at Penang General Hospital, then served two years at the district hospital in Sabak Bernam. Five years in government health clinics followed, and in 2017 he took a Diploma in Family Medicine.

In 2019 he passed the specialist examination of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Malaysian Academy of Family Physicians at the first attempt. He went on to pass the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, which is what allowed him to register on Malaysia's National Specialist Register.

Where many of his contemporaries went into hospital specialties, he stayed in community practice. In 2023 he widened the clinic's range of services around the principles he works to: empathy, continuity and coordination.

His clinical interests are sexually transmitted infections and HIV, which he has managed throughout his career, and knee osteoarthritis, where his interest is in slowing the disease rather than waiting for surgery. He has published a paper on methadone treatment for morphine addiction.

He teaches family medicine, and his work outside the clinic includes medical care for Orang Asli communities and refugees, medical mission work, and research.
