When a health screening is actually worth doing
A screening is worth having when there is something it could plausibly find. These are the reasons that make it more than a receipt.
- You are over 40, or over 30 with a family history of diabetes, heart disease or cancer
- You have not had bloods done in more than two years
- Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease in a parent or sibling
- You are carrying more weight around the middle than you used to
- You drink regularly, or have had an abnormal liver result before
- Your employer, insurer or a visa application needs a medical
- You feel well and would rather know than assume
What is actually tested is decided at the consultation. A panel that finds nothing because it looked for the wrong things is the commonest way a check-up wastes money.
What a health screening here covers
The components below are what a screening is built from. Which of them you need depends on your age, your history and what you came in about.
- The consultation
- It starts with a doctor rather than a form. This is what decides which tests are worth running, and it is included in the packages.
- Blood tests
- Blood sugar and HbA1c, cholesterol and triglycerides, liver and kidney function, and full blood count. The panel is set at the consultation rather than sold in advance.
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Included in the larger packages. It is the usual way fatty liver, gallstones and kidney findings are actually seen.
- Pap smear, for women
- Cervical screening, included in the larger packages and the test that finds cervical change years before it becomes anything.
- Free HIV rapid test
- 4th-generation, anonymous, result in about 15 minutes, and free whether or not you have anything else done that visit.
- The results, explained
- Gone through by the doctor who ordered them rather than emailed as a PDF with reference ranges to interpret yourself.
How a screening visit works
Consultation first
Your age, your family history, your medication and what you are actually worried about. This is where the panel gets chosen.
Samples and scans
Bloods taken, and the ultrasound or Pap smear where they are part of the plan. Most of it happens in the same visit.
Results explained
Not a printout. What each number means for you, what is worth acting on now, and what is worth watching.
What happens next
Treatment started where something needs treating, referral where it needs a specialist, and a date to recheck where a number needs following.
The honest limit of a screening
A check-up is a snapshot. It is good at finding the things that build silently over years, which is most of what actually shortens lives here: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatty liver, cervical change. It is not a guarantee about the year ahead, and no panel of any size makes it one.
It is also worth saying that more tests is not better. Screening for something you have no risk of produces false positives, which produce more tests, which produce anxiety. Which of these you need is the part the consultation is for.
What a screening often leads to
Fatty liver
The commonest thing an abdominal ultrasound and a liver panel actually find, and reversible when it is caught early.
Vaccination
What the screening says you are due, including Gardasil 9, hepatitis B and the annual flu vaccine. Packages include the check-up itself.
Free HIV testing
Free, anonymous, and part of any screening you want it in. The result comes back in about 15 minutes.
Full STD screening
A separate panel, and the one to ask for where a specific exposure rather than general health is the reason you came.

Fasting is needed for the glucose and cholesterol on all three panels, usually eight to ten hours. Prices are for the panel as listed; anything added at the consultation is quoted before it is run.

The clinic is clean, the staff are professional and welcoming, incredibly efficient. The clinic interior design also calming and made my visits less anxious. The doctors here (Dr. Chan & Dr. Kon - sorry if misspelled) are very attentive, explain briefly to me what the do's and don'ts on after care treatments and for future preventions. I also just learned that this clinic is specialized in skin problems and i refer my dry and ictchy skin problems on my fingers. I've been put some plasters to hide the crack and dry skin for months.
