Why the flu vaccine has to be yearly
Influenza viruses change continually, and the vaccine is reformulated to match the strains expected to circulate. Immunity from a previous dose also wanes. Those two together are why last year's vaccination does not carry over.

Who benefits most from the influenza vaccine
Anyone can have it. These are the groups where it changes the most.
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Children from six months old
- Pregnant women, at any stage
- Anyone with diabetes, asthma, or chronic lung, heart, kidney or liver disease
- People who are immunocompromised
- Healthcare workers, and anyone living with or caring for someone above
- Travellers, and pilgrims performing Umrah or Hajj
In pregnancy it is recommended at any stage, and it protects the baby in the first months of life as well.
When to have it, here
Malaysia has no single flu season the way temperate countries do. Influenza circulates all year with peaks that vary, which makes the timing straightforward: any time is reasonable, and the useful rule is simply not to let more than a year pass.
If you are travelling, having it two weeks before departure gives the response time to develop.
What to expect, and what it does not cover
Normal after a dose
- A sore arm for a day or two, which is the usual extent of it
- A mild fever or aches for a day, in some people
- Immune response rather than infection: the vaccine cannot give you influenza
What it does not do
- Protect against the many other viruses that cause colds
- Carry over from last year
- Substitute for the pneumococcal vaccine, which covers a bacterium

The clinic is clean, the staff are professional and welcoming, incredibly efficient. The clinic interior design also calming and made my visits less anxious. The doctors here (Dr. Chan & Dr. Kon - sorry if misspelled) are very attentive, explain briefly to me what the do's and don'ts on after care treatments and for future preventions. I also just learned that this clinic is specialized in skin problems and i refer my dry and ictchy skin problems on my fingers. I've been put some plasters to hide the crack and dry skin for months. The level of care provided was excellent, and the treatment received was highly effective. Healthcare environments can sometimes feel stressful, but this clinic has a wonderful, relaxing atmosphere.
