Circumcision recovery: the healing timeline
Most recoveries are uneventful. Knowing what each week is supposed to look like is what makes it obvious when one is not.
- Days 1-2Some oozing is normal. Pain relief taken on schedule rather than waited for.
- Days 2-3Swelling and bruising peak. Most men are back at desk work.
- Weeks 2-6The wound settles and the appearance keeps changing. Sensitivity is normal and fades.
- 6 weeksHealed. The first fair moment to judge the cosmetic result.
The first week, and what to expect of it
Swelling and bruising are expected and usually peak around the second or third day before settling. Some oozing in the first day or two is normal. Discomfort is managed with the pain relief you are given, taken on schedule rather than waited for.
Most men return to desk work within two to three days. Anything involving lifting, straining or long periods on your feet is worth deferring. From week two the wound continues to settle, and the appearance keeps changing for several weeks: judging the cosmetic result before six weeks is judging it too early.
Aftercare
Six things. Most complications after a circumcision come from this fortnight rather than from the procedure itself.
- Clean and dry
- Shower unless you are told otherwise, and dry the wound gently rather than rubbing it.
- Loose underwear
- Something that supports without pressing.
- No strenuous exercise
- For four to six weeks. Lifting and straining are the ones people underestimate.
- No sexual activity
- Including masturbation, for four to six weeks. Resuming earlier risks reopening the wound.
- Finish the medication
- The prescribed antibiotics and pain relief, taken as directed and to the end of the course.
- Attend the follow-up
- Even if everything appears to be healing well. That visit exists for the questions you cannot answer by looking.
When to contact the clinic rather than wait
Most recoveries are uneventful. These are the ones worth a call, and calling early is always reasonable.
- Bleeding that soaks through a dressing, rather than spotting
- Fever, or spreading redness and warmth around the wound
- Discharge with an odour
- Pain that is increasing rather than decreasing
- Difficulty passing urine
- Swelling that worsens after the third day instead of settling

The clinic is clean, the staff are professional and welcoming, incredibly efficient. The clinic interior design also calming and made my visits less anxious. The doctors here (Dr. Chan & Dr. Kon - sorry if misspelled) are very attentive, explain briefly to me what the do's and don'ts on after care treatments and for future preventions.
