Who a comprehensive screening is worth it for
The wider panel is worth its cost when there is something for it to find. When there is not, a smaller screening answers the same question for less, and we will say so.
- You are over forty and have never had an abdominal ultrasound
- There is diabetes, heart disease, liver disease or an early cancer in the family
- Your waistline, blood pressure or last set of numbers has been drifting the wrong way
- You drink regularly, or you have been told once before about your liver
- You want a full picture rather than the minimum, and you would rather it was decided by a doctor
If you are in your twenties, well, and have no family history, this is not the tier to start on. The standard screening is the honest answer and it costs less.
What a comprehensive health screening adds
Everything the standard screening covers, and then the parts that need equipment or take longer than a blood draw.
- A wider blood panel
- Beyond sugar and cholesterol: liver and kidney function in full, a full blood count, thyroid function and uric acid where they are warranted. Which of these are run is still decided at the consultation.
- Abdominal ultrasound
- The part that most changes what a screening finds. Fatty liver, gallstones and kidney findings are usually silent, and this is how they are actually seen rather than inferred from a blood result.
- Cervical screening, for women
- A Pap smear, included at this tier. It finds cervical change years before it becomes anything, which is the whole reason it exists.
- The free HIV rapid test
- 4th-generation, anonymous, result in about twenty minutes. It comes with any visit, whether or not you have anything else done.
- A longer consultation
- More to go through means more time to go through it. The results conversation is the part that turns a panel of numbers into something you can act on.
How a comprehensive screening works
Come fasted
Eight to ten hours, water only. Glucose and lipids are both on this panel and both are affected by breakfast.
Consultation first
History, family history, and what you have had done before. This is where the panel is finalised, including anything you want added.
Bloods, then the ultrasound
The scan is done on the same visit. A full bladder is not needed for an abdominal scan, but fasting does improve the view of the gallbladder.
Cervical screening, if it applies
Done in the same visit, or booked separately if you would rather. It is not done during a period.
Results, explained
By the doctor who ordered them. Abnormal numbers are common and most of them are not serious, which is exactly why they need explaining rather than emailing.
What a full check-up can and cannot rule out
The wider tier finds more. It does not find everything, and the difference is worth being clear about before you pay for it.
What it finds
- Fatty liver, gallstones and kidney findings, on the scan rather than by inference
- Diabetes and pre-diabetes, and where your cholesterol actually sits
- Cervical change, years before it becomes anything
- Anaemia, thyroid disease and kidney impairment that had no symptoms
What it misses
- Most cancers, which no general screening panel is designed to find
- Anything in the chest or the bowel, neither of which an abdominal scan reaches
- A heart problem that only shows under exertion
- A symptom you already have, which needs seeing about rather than screening for

The clinic is clean, the staff are professional and welcoming, incredibly efficient. The clinic interior design also calming and made my visits less anxious. The doctors here (Dr. Chan & Dr. Kon - sorry if misspelled) are very attentive, explain briefly to me what the do's and don'ts on after care treatments and for future preventions. I also just learned that this clinic is specialized in skin problems and i refer my dry and ictchy skin problems on my fingers. I've been put some plasters to hide the crack and dry skin for months.
